Beyond the White Cube is part of The Chapters, an advanced course series at Metis Art that explores art, curatorial practices, and spaces beyond the walls of a traditional gallery. The course will be led by Jenn Ellis, curator, founder and patron, and Ying Tan, Senior Programmes Manager at the Art Fund. This two hour virtual course will span topics such as alternative approaches to exhibition making, digital art galleries, and the relationship between contemporary art, urban space and nature. The course also covers practices and opportunities for commissioning artworks in unconventional spaces. As a virtual course between Singapore and the UK, the programme offers connectivity between two dynamic arts ecosystems and patrons communities.

Jenn Ellis

Jenn Ellis FRSA is a curator, founder and patron from Colombia, Switzerland and the UK based in London. Over the last decade Jenn has built innovative businesses and projects across the public and private art sector that have been featured in the Evening Standard, BBC, ArtReview, Financial Times, and others. Jenn is the founder of curatorial studio APSARA, which has collaborated with leading galleries and museums globally including Lehmann Maupin, Tate, and South London Gallery. Jenn is equally the co-founder of AORA, the space for your senses. She also co-hosts podcast Between Two Curators, lectures at various institutions including Sotheby’s Institute of Art, collects contemporary art, mentors, and sits on the committee of Chisenhale Gallery.

Ying Tan

Ying Tan is Senior Programme Manager, Collections at the Art Fund where she leads on all acquisitions including the development of new funding streams and commissioning projects as well as managing areas of Art Fund’s diverse portfolio of programmes. Previously, she was Curator in Visual Arts at the British Council in London, UK from 2018-2020 and served as Curator at Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art in Manchester, UK. She has been a visiting lecturer for Christie’s Education on the MA Art of Asia course as well as the Curating the Contemporary MA course at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is currently a trustee of Liverpool Biennial.
